Once Upon a Time in a City Called New Orleans is a collection of dystopian stories that feature tales of a world where New Orleans as we know it no longer exists. Ninth graders at New Harmony High reflected on what they love about New Orleans, and the threats – environmental and otherwise- that jeopardize the land and culture of their community. With engaging lessons from teachers, Jeff Carver and Lauryl Grimes, and the support of 826 New Orleans staff and volunteers, students imagined a new world, built new characters, and crafted new stories. Acclaimed author, Nathaniel Rich, also visited students to provide insights into developing narratives and wrote the foreword for the book. Once Upon a Time in a City Called New Orleans was released and celebrated in January 2020 at Longue Vue House and Gardens.
