Young Authors' Book Project
The Young Authors’ Book Project (YABP) is a collaboration between 826 New Orleans and a dedicated high school teacher to produce a professional-quality publication over the course of about six months.
Volunteers provide individualized support and mentorship to students throughout the process as students write multiple drafts and edit their pieces. Students are involved in every step of the publishing process, from sitting on an editorial board to making critical decisions about the design and layout. The project culminates with a big publishing party and the book is distributed widely.
The 2018-2019 YABP, No Capes: The Real Heroes of New Orleans, is a collection of stories written by 12th graders at G. W. Carver High School. Students defined what made someone extraordinary, and penned inspirational pieces about local people doing great work in the community. The book, featuring a foreword by acclaimed writer Daniel José Older, was released and celebrated in May 2019.
Teachers submit book ideas through a Request for Proposals and are selected by 826 New Orleans staff. The YABP for the 2019-2020 school year has already been selected. However, we’re always interested to hear from educators about potential book projects. You can tell us about your idea here.
