About the Book

In January 2019, 826 New Orleans staff and volunteers visited Ms. B-Smith’s 12th grade class once a week to write about those who inspired them. Students contemplated the question, “What makes someone extraordinary?” creating their own definitions of what it means to be a hero. Once their stories were completed, the student-comprised editorial board met to put the book together, making all creative decision about the publication. They spoke to acclaimed author Daniel José Older about the power of sharing their voices, and collaborated with each other about the overall look. The book was released and celebrated in May 2019.
